What are SDGs?

Back in 2015, the United Nations (UN) outlined 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that all member states aimed to achieve by 2030. These goals provided a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity of the planet and its people, emphasising that global collaboration was necessary to achieve this. The SDGs aim to end all forms of deprivation and inequality, covering housing, health, education, economics, and climate change.

Where does Harker fit in?

As a tech for good start-up on a mission to solve homelessness with data, Harker’s fit-for-purpose solution for homelessness charities naturally aligns with the UN SDGs, specifically the following goals:

  • SDG 1: No Poverty

    • By empowering charities and their frontline workers to spend more time supporting the homeless, we lift more people out of rough sleeping.

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being

    • Rough sleeping has a significant impact on health and well-being and Harker will also help charities support more complex, longer-term cases that involve factors such as substance abuse.

  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

    • By lifting people out of homelessness, we give them opportunities for employment and to contribute to the economy.

  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

    • Homeless people are some of the most vulnerable people in our society and we believe it is an entirely preventable problem if we have the data to understand and tackle its root causes.

  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

    • By improving the support that homeless people receive, we can foster more equitable and sustainable communities, particularly in major UK city centres where rough sleepers are visible.

Currently, UK homelessness charities waste £35 million each year due to bad software. Harker will truly address the sector’s needs and empower frontline charity workers to spend less time behind a screen and more time supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Harker will help charities to support 10% more people through cost savings and more efficient data-driven decision-making, alongside the ability to demonstrate their impact more easily to funders. Innovations, particularly digital ones, such as Harker will play a key part in the future of sustainability as the SDGs highlight the urgent need to shift strategies across the globe.

With homelessness on the rise globally, we’ve never been more in-need of a solution, and by leveraging data effectively we can understand and truly tackle the root causes of homelessness. As we rapidly approach the UN’s 2030 target, Harker is in the ideal position to start creating impact quickly across the UK and beyond.
